The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the key points of standardization work in 2020, with 5G and Internet of Vehicles being the focus! | China Auto News
Release time:2021-01-14

Technology development, standards lead. On May 12, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the "Key Points for Standardization of the Industrial Communication Industry in 2020" (hereinafter referred to as "Key Points"). The biggest difference from previous years is that it first proposed "Focus on 5G Networks and Applications" and "Internet of Vehicles (Intelligent Networks). The main points of the work of “Lian Auto)”.

"5G applications and the Internet of Vehicles are both the trends and priorities of today's automotive industry reforms. They appeared in this year's "Key Points" for the first time. It not only shows that it is a key issue that needs to be solved urgently, but also reflects the great attention of the competent department." Tsinghua University Deng Zhidong, a professor at the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Technology and Systems in the Department of Computer Science, told a reporter from China Automobile News.

5G Internet of Vehicles urgently needs standardization

"The Internet of Vehicles is one of the key points of 5G applications, and the advantages of 5G can be well combined with the Internet of Vehicles and complement each other." Dr. Chen Shanzhi, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Wireless Mobile Communications, said in an interview with a reporter from "China Automobile News", 5G The Internet of Vehicles can promote cross-industry integration, but the lack of standards has always been a major obstacle to its development.

Indeed, without standards and regulations, there is no basis for technology and industrial development. Even recently, Huawei, which has been proclaiming that it "does not build cars," has joined 18 car companies to form a "5G smart car ecosystem", hoping to solve the 5G car networking-related technical and standard issues within the alliance, but the scope is still limited after all.

Objectively speaking, the outstanding features of 5G are fast speed, low latency, and stable signal. In the 5G-V2X (car and external information exchange) car networking system, from high-precision maps, satellite navigation to autonomous driving and even smart transportation, The related technology development of the entering companies is basically fighting each other, and there is no unified standard, which is very unfavorable for the industrialization of 5G car networking technology. Among them, at the data level, whether the data management standards of the Internet of Vehicles are standardized or not is directly related to the life and property safety of drivers and passengers. To solve these problems, standardization is required.

So far, the industry has reached a consensus that 5G Internet of Vehicles is the best choice for autonomous driving and smart cars at this stage. Standards are the result of technology accumulation and a prelude to market demand.

"The standard represents advanced technology and advanced productivity. It is more important to include it in the annual "Key Points". It is more important to grasp the implementation." Deng Zhidong said that this is also the need to guide the upgrade of the 5G car networking industry and optimize and improve the recommended national standard system .

5G and the Internet of Vehicles are closely related to autonomous driving and smart transportation. Even in industry competition, standardization is inseparable.

Recently, the construction of the first “smart highway” with 5G Internet of Vehicles in China-Hangzhou-Shaoxing-Ningbo Expressway has started, with a planned total length of 161 kilometers. After completion, it will be connected to the Jiashao Bridge, Hangzhou Bay Bridge, and Zhoushan Island. Jintang Bridge meets. According to the design, the smart highway will be reflected in the aspects of intelligence, speed, greenness and safety, creating a new road environment in which people, vehicles, and roads are coordinated, supporting intelligent network connection, unmanned driving, and non-inductive charging, etc., and become the promotion of smart cars, "Black technology" for the development of smart transportation. The relevant technical standards have received great attention from the industry, because the standards are related to the general technical issues of the subsequent construction of such highways.

Today, in the development of domestic Internet of Vehicles, with the gradual maturity of 5G commercial and related technologies, it has gradually transitioned from 4G-led LTE-V2X to 5G-V2X, and 5G Internet of Vehicles includes high-speed communication, high-precision positioning, and automation. Navigation, vehicle big data management platforms, etc., are technically in urgent need of standardization.

"In "Key Points", the deployment of 5G applications and the annual standardization of the Internet of Vehicles is not only an emphasis on the development of related industries, but also a driving force for industrial development." Chen Shanzhi believes.

In fact, in the development of related industries, 5G Internet of Vehicles technology and industrial development are inseparable from standardization. For example, in high-precision map applications that are updated in real-time online, autonomous vehicles need to rely on high-precision maps for driving, turning, positioning, and planning routes. Autonomous driving requires high-precision maps to be updated at any time, and it would be unimaginable without standards.

For this reason, in recent years, the standardization of 5G and Internet of Vehicles has received great attention from my country's competent authorities. In 2018, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Standards Committee jointly issued the "Guidelines for the Construction of the National Internet of Vehicles Industry Standard System (General Requirements)" and the "Guidelines for the Construction of the National Internet of Vehicles Industry Standard System (Information and Communication)" and the "National Internet of Vehicles Industry Standard System Construction" Guide (Electronic Products and Services)", comprehensively promote the research and development of the Internet of Vehicles industry technology and standard formulation.

In February this year, the National Development and Reform Commission and other 11 ministries jointly issued the "Smart Car Innovation Development Strategy", which also pointed out that the Chinese standard for smart cars should be established. On March 24, the "Notice of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Promoting the Accelerated Development of 5G" clearly stated that the 5G-V2X standard development and research and development verification should be carried out. At the same time, strengthen the 5G network data security protection, and improve the data security management system and standard specifications around various typical 5G technologies and typical application scenarios such as the Internet of Vehicles and the Industrial Internet.

"The establishment of China's standards for 5G applications and Internet of Vehicles requires gradual and orderly progress in accordance with the annual plan, but also speeds up deployment in consideration of international competition. The content must not only consider domestic related industries, but must also represent the world's advanced level." Deng Zhidong said.
